In autumn, cases of asthma in children multiply

Due to the humidity and the sudden changes in temperature, which cause the little ones to be exposed to a greater number of viruses, dust mites and airborne fungi, in autumn, cases of asthma in children multiply.

Since the return to school, asthma is a disease that causes a quarter of pediatric hospitalizations at this time of year, with episodes of coughing and wheezing, caused by respiratory infections of viral origin.

Children who already have asthma of allergic origin already have the most sensitive airways, so they are more likely to develop asthma at this time of year when the viruses are at ease.

Another factor that influences more children with asthma in the fall is that in many cases the preventive treatment is suspended during the summer, causing the asthma to attack fully when the temperature changes arrive. It is important then to resume the medication before this happens.

Tips to avoid asthma episodes in children

  • As far as possible, sudden temperature changes should be avoided
  • Maintain ambient humidity below 50 percent
  • Maintain the ambient temperature at 20 degrees
  • Clean and ventilate the house
  • Avoid carpets, stuffed animals and other objects that facilitate the accumulation of dust
  • Use an air purifier
  • Exercise regularly: reduce allergic symptoms in children
