Emotional violence towards children, a harsh reality

UNICEF watches over children's rights in the world and highlights many facts that could be forgotten. The "Hidden in full light" report put the harsh reality of millions of cases of violence against children on the table. Also cases of emotional violence.

And it is that mental or psychological abuse can manifest itself in many ways. It is emotional violence to frighten, terrorize, threaten, reject, isolate, ignore, insult, humiliate or ridicule a child. Also do not provide emotional support, neglect your educational or medical needs, expose you to domestic violence and psychological harassment.

The worst is emotional violence against children It is usually perpetrated by people with whom they have a close personal relationship. Occasionally, emotional damage occurs after having suffered other forms of violence, sexual or physical.

Emotional violence, verbal or psychological aggressions, come from parents and guardians in the most common cases. The fourth national study of the United States on the incidence of child abuse and neglect indicated that 73% of all cases of emotional abuse of children in the 2005-2006 period were caused by one of the biological parents.

Recall that the "Hidden in full light" report is based on data from 190 countries and documents the violence that occurs in places where children would have to be and feel safe: their communities, their schools and their homes.

In this way, the fundamental rights of children are violated, regardless of their economic, social, cultural, religious or ethnic circumstances. We do not have to travel to other worlds to know that there is violence of this kind, sometimes closer than we think. Because they are hidden cases.

Definitely, emotional violence against children remains a hidden reality, with few statistics, perhaps due to the difficulty of conceptualizing all possible manifestations of this type of violence and quantifying its ramifications and consequences. But we can't ignore it.
