Does pollution affect children's intelligence?

A joint study prepared by the department of psychology of the Philadelphia Children's Hospital, the Medical University of Pennsylvania and the Department of Environmental Health of the University of Cincinnati among others, indicates that exposure during childhood to certain agents resulting from environmental pollution in cities, such as lead, can lead to a decrease in the intelligence index in children.

The study aims to show the relationship between lead, intelligence and behavior patterns of children. This is one of the few existing studies that show the consequences of living in a city with high pollution rates. A trial group of children between 2 and 7 years old who lived in urban centers and had a concentration of 20 to 44 µg / dL of blood lead was used. The exposure time to lead was also taken into account in this study. The results of the follow-up that were carried out indicated that there was a clear relationship between the level of lead and the child's behavior, especially after 7 years of age, the possibility of affecting intelligence and as a consequence of behavior is considered.

It is really true that the environment influences the good development that a child can present, we would even highlight other negative aspects of the big cities that not only affect children, but also the elderly.
