Spain, the European country with the most caesarean sections

We have talked several times about high number of caesarean sections that are practiced in SpainSpecifically, 20% of births are through this technique when WHO recommends that the percentage be between 10% and 15%.

There are 100,000 caesarean sections of 400,000 births per year in our country, a figure that although surpassed in Latin America (33%), It is the highest in Europe.

They divide 40% in private health and 23% in public health, while the European average is 18%.

But what are the reasons and what are the solutions?

Among the most frequent causes can be found pregnancies at increasingly advanced ages, multiple births, many consequences of assisted reproduction techniques, scheduled births and according to experts also defensive medicine as a method of prevention against possible demands.

With respect to the solutions, evidently the fact of having such a high number of caesarean sections caused the government to take action on the matter.

The Normal Birth Attention Strategy, the new plan that Health brings at hand aimed at a more humanized and less medicalized delivery care aims to reduce the number of caesarean sections by 12% through more natural birth techniques.

We will see if effectively with this new strategy the number of cesarean sections in Spain can be reduced.
