More advances in fetal surgery

A few days ago we learned that the baby who had had spina bifida surgery inside the mother's womb was discharged without sequelae when she was 22 weeks pregnant.

Yesterday the news talked about another intrauterine operation, this time done to a 21 week gestation girl through endoscopy to release an amniotic band that pressed the umbilical cord and his left leg, which would otherwise have caused his death, or in the best case the amputation of his leg.

The mother was barely made small incisions of 3 millimeters, what is necessary to introduce the small camera taught by doctors in this video.

The problem, which affects one in three thousand children, was detected by means of a routine ultrasound and thanks to the operation it has managed to save the life of the little girl and of course, her leg.

I am glad that this type of news is becoming more frequent and that advances in fetal surgery allow saving the lives of many babies in pregnancy in several cases, leaving them without any sequelae.

There are more and more resources to detect pregnancy failures and new fetal surgery techniques to remedy them.

It is the third time this type of operation is performed in the world and the first in Europe.

Vall d'Hebron Hospital, where the operation was performed, is a pioneer in surgical interventions in fetuses and together with the Hospital Clínic they lead the fetal endoscopic surgery in Spain.
