High cholesterol levels in 22% of Spanish children

Pediatricians and specialists warn about the high levels of childhood cholesterol, whose incidence reaches, for the moment, 22% of the Spanish child population. Possibly this figure would be higher since to detect high cholesterol it is necessary to perform a blood test and in some cases they are not performed. It is not that now suddenly there are so many cases of cholesterol in children, but that preventive campaigns carried out by specialists for a couple of years are revealing a real situation that in the future will seriously affect the quality of life of these children already in an adult state.

On several occasions we have talked about cholesterol and about the recommendations that pediatricians and specialists provide us, to follow up by means of an annual blood test that, according to specialists, should be carried out from the first year of age. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet or exercising regularly would be conditions so that high cholesterol is not present in children, with exceptions. In Europe every year 400,000 new cases of child overweight appear and the obesity figures at European level, now reaches 14 million. As much as the topic is discussed, despite the information campaigns and the effort of the pediatric group, the figures for obesity and also those for infant cholesterol increase, giving the impression that parents do not take into account the advice of specialists. As we have said on several occasions, we are the parents who can change this situation and provide children with a future with an optimal quality of life.

Just establish healthy habits and lifestyle in our children, as parents we always want the best for them, so it is necessary to start as soon as possible. Recall that many of the cardiovascular diseases that occur in adulthood are based on a childhood with excessive cholesterol.
