A baby swallowed a blade of the blender with the mash

It is not our intention to cause alarm, but this story can serve as an experience for other parents to take precautions on the utensils they use when preparing the baby's food. It happened at Christmas 2009 in Bilbao, where Asier, a 22-month-old baby, swallowed a blade of the blender with the mash.

It is inexplicable how it could have happened that a child swallowed a piece of two-centimeter metal mixed with the fruit without realizing it, when babies usually spit anything that they find unpleasant like a seed, a piece of shell or pulp .

However it has happened. The mother noticed that the blade was missing when washing the blender, and looking at the plate among the remains of the porridge found part of the blade. Then he thought about the possibility that his baby had swallowed the other part.

Before the incredulity of the father and the insistence of the mother, the boy was taken to the emergency room where he was first examined with a metal detector to avoid unnecessary radiation. They got a big surprise when the device began to whistle and then it was confirmed with an x-ray that the blade had passed through the esophagus to the baby's stomach unfortunately causing no harm. He was given a diet rich in fiber and a few days later he ejected the blade in a bowel movement.

The blender was of the Carrefour Home brand, purchased at the same establishment in November 2009. Although it was immediately withdrawn from the market when the father went to make the corresponding claim, I do not explain how it is possible that the case was not disclosed in its time to alert other parents who had bought it.

Fortunately, everything was in a big scare, but it comes to leave us a lesson: you have to wash (or at least check) the blades of the blender always before mashing the child. Especially when we crush hard foods like an apple, the blades can bend (it has happened to me) or as in this case, break.

Another recommendation that may come in handy for legal claims: the damaged device (toy, or whatever) must be kept as evidence and in no case delivered as Asier's father has done with the mixer.
