Types of intercoms for babies

The baby monitor They are usually gadgets composed of an emitting element and another receiver. The sender, placed near the baby or the room that we want to have monitored, is responsible for recording the images and sending them wirelessly in most cases to the issuer, which is the device that parents or relatives usually have nearby.

Although the ultimate goal of baby monitors is more or less common, there are substantial differences between them to establish a classification, which we can perform according to several criteria.

A basic classification of baby monitors would leave us with models analog and digital. The former are usually the most affordable and basic, simple to use but with the complication of being sensitive to interference from other devices in the digital home or even from other intercoms in the neighbors. In these models, that there are enough operating channels is vital to avoid interference.

Currently, most of the vigilababés are digital (of type DECT(such as cordless phones) and with this we save interference or annoying noise problems.

Sound, video and even movements

We can also differentiate between intercoms according to the signal they transmit. Thus, we can distinguish between:

  • Sound baby monitor: basically they are responsible for transmitting sound from the transmitter to the receiver. There are those that are activated by noise and others that transmit permanently. It is interesting to have a model with which it is possible both to listen and to be able to transmit our voice.
  • Video baby monitor: they add the emission of moving images to the previous ones, and therefore, the receiver must have a screen and is larger and more expensive. There are also models that send the signal directly to the TV, which can be consulted from a computer with Internet access or that have infrared vision to observe the baby in the dark.
  • Baby monitor with motion sensor: The risk of sudden death that exists in newborns is one of the major concerns of first-time parents. In addition to the advice on room temperature, place it sleeping on your back, do not smoke in your presence or use a pacifier, some parents may prefer surveillance systems with motion sensors to alert them in case the baby stops breathing. These systems can be based on physical components or directly on software responsible for analyzing the images that are recorded and determine accordingly if the child's breathing is normal. They are also sued by parents of premature babies.

Others Additional features common to intercoms, whether video or sound, are for example the possibility of emitting music with them, serving as a supporting light or even projecting images. And some are even able to measure the temperature of the room and set personal alarms.

In the next installment of this special we will talk about what we should take into account when choosing the baby monitor that best suits our needs or preferences.
