Susana from Susanita's Little Gallery: "Children are the most sincere audience in the face of animated art that they also admire and enjoy"

We bring Peques and Plus one interview with Susana Rodríguez Escudero who manages the Susanita's Little Gallery site. Susana Rodríguez Escudero is a Galician born in Vigo in 1975. From a very young age, she loved stories and fantasized about her own world, as well as drawing and painting. Maintains a collection of illustrated books, children's records, cartoon merchandising of the 60s, 70s and 80s, works of art that seem very rich. In 1999 he graduated in Fine Arts in the specialty of Design and Audiovisual and until very recently he has dedicated himself to teach plastic and drawing. In July 2011 he presented his thesis “The cartoon in Spain until 1966. Francisco Macián film projects in the Macián Studios”. While directing Susanita's Little Gallery, she has time to investigate Spanish cartoon productions until the 1970s.

In the interview we talk about the animation, the tastes of children, the artists that illustrate the works that can be found in his gallery, the dedication of sales to charities and little Susanita, a charming character who is always in the gallery ready to guide us through the riquiño art.

What is Susanita's Little Gallery?

Susanita's Little Gallery is an art gallery and online store dedicated exclusively to Riquiño Art. The gallery will soon include merchandising related to the exhibitions. We have an attractive gallery and a blog in which we talk about both emerging and consolidated local artists.

What is riquiño art?

Arte Riquiño, is the term with which I define the set of works, which could have come out of a wonderful story, or a beautiful cartoon movie. They are works made in any technique, which are cheerful and fun, while beautiful and like to adults and children. The artists who perform these works are dedicated to the fields of animation, illustration or comic, or all these activities. They are mainly inspired by artists from these 50s and 60s disciplines. You could say that the mother of Riquiño Art is the American artist of great popularity in the 50s Mary Blair.

What kind of readers do you have in your blog?

Blog readers are primarily fond of illustration and animation.

How often do the exhibits on the page have and how long do they last?

The intention is to open new exhibitions every month and a half or two months. At the same time there will be a maximum of three exhibitions that overlap, and are available online for an average of five months.

What artists exhibit in Susanita's gallery?

Little by little, new artists will be incorporated to participate in the successive exhibitions. All of them with experience in the world of animation, illustration and comic. They are artists from all over the world, including Be Towers, Betsy Bauer, Ryuku Uratsuji, Neiko Ng, Emanuèl Bouncher, Juan Bauty, Jose Luis Ocaña, Ed Warner, Iria Aldrey, Thierry Cattant, Rozenn Bothuon, Israel Sanchez, Rafa Toro , Fermín Solís, Jaime Villanueva, Pakoto, Ketódico, Marta Anaïs, Ashlyn Anstee, Gabby Zapata, Verónica Alvarez, Alex Leighton, Cocotte In Papier, Elysa Castro and Noneta.

What can an amateur find to one of the works on display in the gallery and what can he buy?

The works found in Susanita's Little Gallery have a common factor. All are riquiñas. All the works are for sale. Also soon they will be able to buy sheets and postcards of them.

What kind of agreements do you have with children's charities that can be seen on your website?

Each exhibition is dedicated to a charity association dedicated exclusively to children and young people. 20% of the sales of said exhibition are donated to said association. Likewise, 20% of the merchandising benefits made from said exhibition will also be donated to it.

What goals do you hope to achieve with the Susana Gallery?

One of Susanita's Little Gallery's main intentions is to be able to give this type of art a place, because today, at least in Spain, it has no place in the galleries we know. Many people refer to these creators as simple cartoonists, and not as artists, which is what they really are. Others think they are children's things, and indeed they are.

Remember that children are the most sincere and demanding public and it happens that these are the kind of things they admire and enjoy.

How do you see the evolution of animated films especially for the little ones and what productions are being made in Spain?

Francisco Macián managed with Macián Studios, after 16 years of drought, to make the fifth feature film in our country. All a feat. Currently, an average of three animated films are made in Spain, something unthinkable in those years. Antonio Banderas is one of the strongest people who is betting on moving this industry forward in Spain, and acts as an ambassador outside our country, which gives him an exit beyond our borders, since only with the Spanish box office, is difficult to collect what was invested.

I love the character of Susanita that you have created. Can you introduce it to us?

Susanita Little is a character created by the artist María Longa. She is a tiny little girl who lives inside a very small painting hidden in a corner of the house of a very chiripitiflautic family

In this little house, when no one can see him, he leaves the small square and travels through the books of stories they have on all the shelves. It is the most fun in the world. The drawings that illustrate them are so beautiful! They remind him a lot of where he comes from. Wouldn't you like to enter a world full of those cheerful and fun drawings? She calls him "Riquiño Art." And it is that the mother of the house where she lives says many times "riquiño" to all things that are beautiful and tender at the same time.

We give you the thanks to Susana for all the explanations He has given us about his gallery and we want to tell him that we love the designs that can be bought in it. In addition we wish him many successes and we leave the doors open in Peques and Más for when he wants to tell us more about children's entertainment that is becoming stronger and we also love parents.
