More reflections on the results of PISA 2012 in Spain

According to El Confidencial, the Spanish average of expenditure per non-university student in 2010 is 5,484 euros. There is a high dispersion that goes from 7,500 euros in the Basque Country, 7,000 from Navarra, to 4,500 euros (approximately) in Andalusia or Madrid. The article basically indicates that there is no relationship between greater investment in education and better academic performance measured according to PISA 2012. In any case, it does not seem reasonable to me either that the results in the education of children depend so much, regardless of the investment applied, where they are educated.

In my opinion, and seeing the graph that illustrates the article, we have a serious problem of commitment in Spain for the training of students. The challenge is that we have to realize what will happen in the medium to long term in the world and that many other countries have decidedly put themselves to the task. Asian countries greatly value training, effort and work and are aware that the labor market in which they will participate is global. its commitment to talent is key to achieve growth and continuous improvement. I am concerned about the position of old Europe that does not reach the OECD average and of course Spain that does not exceed the European average.

I think we still have a lot to learn, reflect and revolutionize. Perhaps the focus should not be placed solely on self-esteem, so that not all the phrases spoken by many young people begin with the personal pronoun me, and we must encourage them to practice self-control. And it is that children have to learn to value, to strive, to reflect, to have critical vision and parents have to realize that overprotection does not lead anywhere. We need children with skills, with talent, with the ability to imagine, create, to get up after falling and be autonomous. Their challenge is to compete in the world and many other children are already preparing for it.

I am very concerned to see the demonstrations that periodically appear in the streets of Madrid, despite the good results of this Autonomous Community. And it is that Madrid is one of those with a lower budget and in which it has even opted for a baccalaureate of excellence. In addition, the opinions of those who manifest themselves move me to reflection because many times their statements they seem to ignore the statistics that are derived from PISA and they make me doubt if they put the students, everyone, at the center of the claims.

We will have to continue reading, learning and reviewing the methods that are applied at school to improve in PISA. Although we have to run if we don't want to see how we keep going down and away from the OECD average and the European Union.
